Start with a star
First locate a bright star, then compare nearby patterns with the chart. Return to a wide field if you lose your bearings.
Find the charts from volume II, learn to recognise guide stars and continue to the Messier objects.
Start with Orion →Its stars appear in the same direction, but they are not all at the same distance. An asterism is an apparent pattern: the Big Dipper, for example, is only part of Ursa Major.
The filters below use the month and altitude of the guide star selected in the book. They do not predict the visibility of the entire constellation from Luxembourg.

First locate a bright star, then compare nearby patterns with the chart. Return to a wide field if you lose your bearings.
The presence of a constellation in this worldwide atlas does not guarantee that it can be observed from Luxembourg. Terrain, buildings or haze can easily hide low targets.
The Messier links lead to photographs, suggested equipment and the book’s locating guides.
Explore the Messier catalogue →Fact sheets adapted from Steve Cimolino’s volume II, Comprendre comment explorer le ciel, version dated 17 October 2026. French names and the selection of five stars are taken from the book. The Latin name of Apus was corrected against the IAU list.
