Starship / Super Heavy

Two giant stages testing complete reusability.

SpaceX's Starship system combines the Super Heavy booster with the Starship upper stage, which is also a spacecraft. This entry covers the integrated system, first flown in 2023 after earlier tests of separate prototypes.

A history of launches

The first integrated launch in April 2023 ends with the vehicle's destruction. The investigation and subsequent tests lead to changes in the launcher and its ground infrastructure.

The fifth flight in October 2024 successfully catches Super Heavy with the launch tower's arms. The upper stage follows a test trajectory and splashes down in the Indian Ocean, without a crew.

Dates follow the days reported by the source agencies, generally in local time; the UTC day can differ. Crews belong to the selected missions, not every flight in the family.

What this work changed

Its historical significance lies in large-scale experimentation with reusable launch technology.

First flight or first test of the family, including unsuccessful or suborbital attempts.
